EDGE Obtains Class Certification in False Discounting Case against Lenovo

Published on: May 15th, 2025

On May 7, 2025, Judge Jeffrey S. White of the Northern District of California issued an Order certifying two injunctive relief classes in a false reference pricing case brought by EDGE against Lenovo, the world’s largest computer manufacturer. The classes consist of California consumers who purchased laptops, desktops, workstations, and tablets on Lenovo’s website that were sold below the advertised reference prices for the majority of the time.

As outlined in the Order, during the class period, Lenovo advertised its reference prices in various formats, including as a “Web Price,” an “Est. Value,” and a strikethrough price (e.g., $2,619.99). Lenovo argued that the named plaintiffs were only exposed to the “Web Price” and therefore were atypical of other class members. The court, however, rejected that argument, noting that “even when Lenovo changed the format of the price stacks, the basic information remained the same: the reference price coupled with the purported discount.”

The lawsuit, filed in August 2021 by EDGE and Capstone Law, alleges that Lenovo advertises inflated reference prices on its website to mislead consumers into believing they are receiving substantial discounts, thereby paying more based on a false perception of savings.

“We welcome the certification Order and look forward to vindicating the rights of every consumer harmed by Lenovo’s deceptive pricing practices,” said Daniel Rozenblatt, lead counsel for the plaintiffs. “Companies shouldn’t be allowed to sidestep consumer protection laws merely by switching from one form of false advertising to another.”
